We leave Laughlin, Nevada a little before 0800 and drive towards Kingman, Arizona. From Kingman, we head southeast towards the small towns of Wikieup and Wickenburg. It is easy driving, mostly 2 lanes on Highway 93. The terrain and plant life changes as we drive. We start to see some Saguaro cactus after passing Wickieup. As we drive through Wickenburg, it reminds us of our last trip to southern Arizona as we spent a night here. It is a nice little ranching community. Driving on, we reach the outskirts of Phoenix which equates to traffic lights and the accompanying traffic. We stop for gas and a quick chicken sandwich at McDonald’s before heading towards Tucson.
This is all Interstate driving and goes quickly. We make a stop at the Anita Street Market, a very small, not really a market place, that we had discovered on our last trip. We stop to pick up a half dozen tamales for dinner while we are camping. We also fill up the tank and then get back on the Interstate. An hour later and we arrive in the small town of Willcox. We decided to stop here and have some Mexican food so we did not have to cook at camp tonight. We eat in Isabella’s where their salsa is delicious with just the right amount of kick. We split our meals of chicken fajitas and chile rellenos. It is all very good with homemade tortillas. We have made good time and leave Willcox at 4:15. Down the highway we go until we reach the Bowie exit and then drive down Apache Pass Road to the dirt Happy Camp Canyon Road. 3 miles later, we arrive at Indian Bread Rocks. There is a picnic area here with a pit toilet and several campers and RVs are parked near the picnic area. We pass them and continue on the dirt road about another 1/4 mile where we find a nice flat spot to call home for the night.
After setting up the tent, we hike up the large rock formation that is behind our campsite. At the top we get a beautiful view of our camp and the surrounding area. It would definitely be fun to do some off-route hiking around here. The hugh rocks are awesome in their own right. We take a few pictures of some weird holes in the large rock slabs and then walk down to the picnic area to read the sign about Indian Bread Rocks. After that it is time for bed as the sun sets on our day. The sun sets early this time of year so we are asleep by 7:30. Tomorrow awaits.
