Danger Will Robinson

Carol and I reverse our breakfast choices this morning, pancakes for her, eggs for me. We are going to do the Green Gardens Trail today and will not start it until later. This is due to the tides and a sea cave that you can go to at lower tides. Low tide is at 4:25 PM today so it should be accessible by 2:00 PM or later. This leaves us with a lazy relaxing morning. We do accomplish some things such as rearranging our clothes for the next week and catching up on uploading pictures for the website.

Worlds Largest Cairn

We head over to the trail head around 12:30. When we arrive, we have lunch, which is leftover pasta from the night we cooked. We start hiking just before 1:00 and hope it works out with the tide. The trail is rocky and climbs for the first mile. From there it is a mix of climbs and descents, although most of the time we are descending. We also are going down quite a bit of the dreaded wooden steps which does not bear well for the return trip. It takes us about an hour and a half to go 2.75 Miles to the beach.

Carol in the Red Chair

It is beautiful here and we spend some time sitting in two more red chairs that have been placed on the top of the cliffs with a great view. After resting up some, we have some steep stairs to climb down to the beach. From there, we round a point and begin our journey to the sea cave. The tide is low enough for us to get around but there is enough sea weed and wet rocks to make us watch every step we take.

Sea Cave

The slow going is rewarded with a large sea cave carved out of the tall cliff face. It is probably about 50 feet deep and at least that tall. It is arched in shape and we crawl around inside it. I then go to the next point to see if there is anything worthwhile there. There are a couple of more caves but they are very shallow so we decide to return to the main beach. We sit there enjoying the day and the surf before mustering up the strength to start back up.

Our New German Friends

About half way there a young German couple catches me as I sit and wait for Carol to catch up. Carol had spoken to them on the way down and we talk with them for quite a while. They are from Dusseldorf and are enjoying their visit to Newfoundland. They take a couple of pictures of all of us and we take one of them. We talk for quite a while and then hike together for another bit until we reach the point where we have a mile to go of mostly downhill. Carol and I take a break on a bench while Julianne and David continue on. While sitting a young German man stops. He is part of a large group of University students that we saw on the beach. They are studying geology in Germany and he says this is much better than seeing things in a book. What a cool way to learn.

Pan Fried Cod

We finish up the hike a little after 6:00 PM and head directly to Trout River for dinner. We eat at the Seaside restaurant and have, what else, pan fried cod dinner with an appetizer of mussels. It is all good as every seafood meal here has been. Another great day is done. The weather for our hike was probably the best we have had overall with a temperature of about 75 and a nice cool breeze to accompany it. Tomorrow is supposed to rain as we head back south on our last day in Newfoundland.
