We had a good nights sleep in our room at the Antlers Motel. Today, they will move us from the handicap room to the room we have reserved for the next two nights. We get a text from Shannon around 0800 saying that they are at the highway and waiting for a ride to town. She also says that Joy joined them in camp last night and is on her way to town also. Shannon has booked a room at our motel for two nights. They arrive and put their stuff in our room until theirs is ready.
We then head across the street with Shannon, Kym, and Joy, to eat breakfast at the Kopper Kettle. Carol orders some pancakes and I, thinking that I would eat a smaller breakfast get an order of biscuits and gravy. Boy, was I wrong as the plate was a large one and covered with two gigantic biscuits and sausage gravy. It fills me up. After breakfast, it is back to the hotel and Shannon’s room is ready. Kym wants a shower and they take their things from our room to theirs. She will be waiting for her son to pick her up and take her back to the bay area.
Carol and I (mostly Carol) sort our clothes for the laundry. Carol goes down the street to the laundromat while I stay at the motel and look over our next section and start to make a list of meals and supplies we will need. Our sleeping bags are airing outside on the railing so I leave the door open to watch them as the temperature is fairly pleasant. A short while later, Joy shows up and I tell her Carol is doing laundry. She immediately starts quizzing me on when we are getting to Old Station and what are our plans for hiking the hot and dry Hat Creek Rim. My answers are vague because I do not really know exactly what time we would get there but I tell her based on how we do and weather, we had planned on getting to Old Station in 3 days in the morning, eating there, and hiking out in the late afternoon to beat the heat. She doesn’t seem satisfied with my answer and says she will come back later. Carol returns from her laundry duty and later on Shannon stops by after Kym has left. We go over our hiking plans from here to Old Station and Burney and tell her she is welcome to join us all the way to Dunsmuir. Dunsmuir is where she has planned to stop for this year. She now knows how much supplies she will need between here and Burney, where she has a resupply package. We both like her and I know Carol will enjoy the female company. Later on we all go to the Sports Locker for dinner and then Carol disappears to Shannon’s room to enjoy some wine. I was supposed to join them but get wrapped up in some real world business and phone calls and then end up just staying in.
Tomorrow, another relaxing day, another shower or two, and some shopping for supplies.
What do you guys plan to do during the winter to stay in shape for next summer’s hiking?
If your winter weather gets too bad, head on down to Florida where we swim all year.
