We sleep in a bit and then have a nice relaxing breakfast. We planned on taking an 1100 train today so there is no rush. It is only an hour train ride from Palermo to Cefalu, the small coastal town where we are going to next. We say our goodbyes to Giuseppe and the Wine and Limoncello hours and walk to the Palermo train station. The train is mostly on time and the ride is very nice. We ride along the north coast of Sicily and sometimes the train is leaning right over the sea. Lots of tunnels to go through as the coast is very hilly. Reaching Cefalu, we find our way from the station to our BNB for the night. As we coordinated, Gina is waiting for us when we arrive. Included with the BNB is a free stair master program of 80 steps to our room. There is an elevator but I don’t think it has run since the 1940s.

La Rocca From the Terrace

La Rocca From the Terrace

We get a nice room with double balconies overlooking the square and the sea. The real payoff here is the rooftop terrace with views of the sea below and La Rocca high above us. We hope the weather will be good so we can take advantage of it.
Since it is early and we have not got our exercise in yet, we decide to explore a little of the town. We check out a few restaurants along the way and one in particular that said reservations were a must. It looks closed but I see someone in there so turn the door. The young man says they are closed today so I ask about reservations tomorrow. 9:30 at night is all they have, much too late for us, so I ask about Mercoledi (Wednesday) and they have 1930 available when they open. Reservation for Wednesday done, we walk along, have a slice of pizza for lunch, and check out the beach area. We find a nice bench and sit to people watch. The beach looks very nice and the people, strolling by are very entertaining. We spend close to an hour talking and watching, analyzing the fashion statements, and enjoying our shady bench. We then walk further along the beach and come upon a car rally show.

Old Thunderbird

Old Thunderbird

There is an old Thunderbird, lots of old Porsches, Fiats of course, and many other vehicles. We slowly make it back to our room and enjoy some time relaxing on the terrace. From our room, I notice a contingent of Sicilian men have congregated on the benches below. I think they are solving all of the towns problems, maybe all of Sicily’s as well. A short while later, it starts to rain which increases in intensity to a torrential down pour. We are soon watching streams of water flowing down the hilly streets. Quite a spectacle from our perch up high.
Carol goes to put some of our stuff in the common area fridge and ends up talking to some people from Australia.

Here Every Night

Here Every Night

Wondering where my wife went, I emerge from the room and sit with them in the kitchen. John and Cassie offer us some wine and even though I was going to detox a bit from my Palermo indulgence, I have a small glass or two and we add some great conversation as well.
Dinner time rolls around and the rain has let up. We decide to try a place we spotted earlier. We get an antipasto of vegetables, cheese, ,salami, and olives and a pasta Norma and a seafood pasta. The food is good but not roll your eyes back great. After dinner, we walk off some calories and I get a nice evening picture of the Cefalu cathedral. There is a large cross lit up on the hill above it. We are looking forward to a couple of nice slow meandering days here. Tomorrow, La Rocca.
