We get a bit of a later start today after our late night. Breakfast is a repeat of yesterday’s food. We eventually get out the door around 1130. Our plan is to walk to the Capuchin Catacombs which are a bit off the main drag. We get back to the palace area and find the street that is on our map where we need to turn. We all along it for a ways and the area gets a little sketchy. At least it feels that way to me so my alert radar is up a bit. After a bit,,there is no sign of the place so we turn around and try another street near where we turned off the main drag. It is called via cappuchini so has promise and on the map it looks like the catacombs could be between this and the street we just tried. We walk for quite a bit and catch glimpse of a dome off to our left so that may be it. It just doesn’t seem like we should be this far from the main road to find it. A little further ahead we turn left thinking maybe it is the domed church we saw.

Where are We?

Where are We?

Another left and a few blocks and we find the church with the dome and a museum by it but it is not what we are looking for. The catacombs close at 1300 and it is now 1245 so we just call it a tour of the more gritty side of Palermo and walk back toward the four quarters area. We take a left onto a street we have not explored that goes by the opera house. It is supposed to be a nice building so why not go check it out. We find it and it is Ok but nothing to write in a blog about. We then wind down some streets getting ever closer to our hotel. We pass a church of San Ignazio, my fathers birth name, so I have to take a picture. Then we emerge at San Domenico Church and Square. It has a beautiful baroque exterior with two bell towers and columns and statues. We also notice we are in the Verruchia area, which Giuseppe said had good street food. Unfortunately it is Sunday and siesta time, a double whammy, so nothing is open. We continue on and walk back to the street food place we went to yesterday. It is open and we get two more paninos to go.

Street Food on the Street

Sandwiches in hand we walk the short distance to the hotel arriving just in time to grab two cold beers to go with our food. We sit at the outside table watching as people walk by. Good food again and now it is our turn to siesta.
After our afternoon relaxation, we of course must check out the lounge. We start out alone and then about an hour later are joined by Stefano. I forgot to write that we also met him last night when he checked in. He is from the suburbs of Paris and has some Italian roots also. We enjoy getting to know him better tonight. Charles and Mary eventually show up but will not be going out for dinner as they had an early meal so they could go to bed early since they have to leave for the airport around 0430 tomorrow. We will however be joined tonight by Stefano. I was trying to behave with no limoncello but Charles orders one and Giuseppe sneaks me one as well. Before I know it and unbeknownst to Carol, I have had 3 good size shots. It is 0800 and we have to get off to dinner before I get carried away again. We say our goodbyes to our new British friends who we hope to cross paths with again, and head out with our new French friend. We are going to the same restaurant and when we get there, the waiter remembers us and asks where our friends from last night are.

We tell him we have a new friend instead. Tonight, we get the best of the previous evenings. Mussels, pasta with the walnut sauce, and the ravioli with black squid ink. After forgetting my camera last night, I take care to bring it tonight. We have a nice meal with Stefano and return to our hotel after a relaxing day. Things didn’t go exactly to plan but we still had a wonderful day.
