We awoke fairly early today as we have about a 7 hour drive to Lubec, Maine. This is where we will be starting our Canadian adventure from. Father Ron shared some sticky cinnamon buns with us that he had bought at the farmers market yesterday. A nice breakfast start to our day. Unfortunately, it was soon time to say good bye and head on our way.
The drive was mostly back roads through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. We traveled through the White Mountains in New Hampshire and the busy town of Gorham. A popular spot, especially on a Saturday as every trail head we passed was bursting at the seams with parked cars. Once past there, the roads were quiet and not very busy until we shared the road to Bar Harbor, Maine and Acadia National Park. Luckily, we only were on this route for 25 miles before we turned North towards Lubec.
Lubec has the distinction of being the most eastern point of the United States. There are also several lighthouses nearby including Quoddy Head Light. Carol and I had visited this point about 20 years ago when we brought Laura to visit her Grandparents and took a side trip to Maine without her. We had left Vermont at 0850 and arrived in Lubec at 4:15 which wasn’t bad.
We checked in to our room and then drove the short distance to town. They have a micro brewery and Carol had to have a beer so I was forced to have one also. We both settled on a amber beer called Quoddy Head Red. It was very good. The people were very friendly and as we sat there, many locals came in. We decided to eat elsewhere as the food was mostly pizzas, some soups, and salads. We were able to walk a block up the street and check out several places. We settled on Franks Dockside Restaurant, but before we went in, we checked out a nearby small park on the waterside. The small Mulholland Light sat across the Channel in Canada.
Unfortunately this delay caused us to have to sit outside on the patio overlooking the water. Why is this unfortunate, you ask? Well after sweating like crazy in New York, New Jersey, and Vermont, we have finally found some cool temperatures. It is in the mid 60’s and there is a breeze off the water. We have to get our sweat jackets out of the RAV and they provide blankets to cover our legs. Other than this it is a pleasant place to sit. Carol gets pan fried Haddock and I get a baked Haddock Florentine. The food is very good and we enjoy our meal in the cool air. We go back to our hotel to rest up for our busy day tomorrow. Our Canadian adventure has begun 2 miles from the Canadian Border.
