Kenosha Pass, CO August 10, 2003
Charlies foot is holding up and today we will hike from Kenosha Pass to the Jefferson Lake road. This section is the first part of Segment 6. We slept in today and get started at 8:55 AM. We start by climbing away from Highway 285 and the Kenosha Pass Trail Head. As we top a ridge we come out of the forest to a fantastic view. We can see down to the town of Jefferson, across all of South Park, and up to Georgia Pass. We take a few pictures and start on again.
We walk along the ridge for a while trying to keep our eyes off the scenery while we hike. This area is stunningly beautiful. The only downside is the number of mountain bikers. We expected this and they were all polite and friendly as they went by but it is hard to get in a rhythm when you have to stop and step off the trail so often. We descend and cross FS roads 809 and 827 where there seem to be a few nice places to camp. We make good time as we are mostly descending and arrive at the Jefferson Lake Road by 11:25 AM. We covered 6.2 miles in 2 hours and 30 minutes. We have lunch by some beaver ponds and head back to the campground to tear down camp and drive home. Only 20 miles left in Segment 6!
