Today is a zero day which means zero miles hiking. Sierra City really exaggerates with the use of the word city. The town consists of the Country General store, open for lunch and dinner 1100-6:00 and the Red Moose Cafe open for breakfast and lunch 0700-2:30. There is one other place that looks like it is only open on weekends.
Our day starts with breakfast at the Red Moose where we chat with a few other hikers and the owner. We meet Sweet Tooth, who hiked the trail in 2013 and was a photographer by profession. He received a job offer to write a guide book for Mountaineer Press and is researching sections of the trail. Nice young man. The book will hopefully be done in 2017. After breakfast we go through the resupply box we had sent to the general store. We are sending our heavy microspikes home and our snow gaitors along with some other items we feel we do not need. We did not use them and the snow problems will lessen as we head north so we will be a pound and a half lighter from here on in. At least that is the theory. Box mailed, we relax, have lunch (another burger), sip beer, and savor life. We have leftover pastrami sandwich for dinner as it was also very large and very delicious. Lila has agreed to drive us to the trail head tomorrow morning after we have breakfast, so the trail kindness is continuing. Tomorrow, the trek continues.
Are you guys really going to sell your house and become wanderers? There are some nice hiking trails in Florida. No mountains, never any snow and, believe it or not, not many bugs.
Good luck.
Bob
