Today, you can be involved in the journal by playing Name that Picasso. First, a little bit about our day.
We went to the bakery this morning to buy breakfast and lunch. We have what I am calling the Amoretto Danish. Amoretto because that is the prevailing flavor I taste, and Danish because hey, we are in Denmark.
We catch the 0845 Ferry Back to Svendborg on what is a cloudy morning. We are scheduled to arrive at 1000 and will try to catch a 1011 train. We wait near the off ramp second in line to get off. We are off the boat at 1002 and walk briskly the .5 mile to the train station. We get there at 1009 and make the train. Our connection in Odense goes smoothly and we get on the train to Copenhagen. All the seats have lights that say something reserved. Carol asks a young man what it means and he says it just says may be reserved but not to worry, very few are reserved on this train. We settle in as they make some Danish announcements. The young man comes back and tells us he thought we would like to know what was said. The train will be on time and more importantly the water closet aka toilet is closed on our car but the one in the next car is working. It was very nice of him to tell us.
We arrive at our station at 1304 and find our way to our hotel. The room is not ready but for 100 Kroners per night they will put us in another room. No thanks. We can wait until 1500. We had read about them doing this and also that they charge to hold your luggage. 20 Kroner per bag but we find a locker downstairs for 20 Kroners for both packs.
We head out to visit the Staten Kunst Museum which is their National Gallery of Art and is free to visit.
It is laid out very nice with good explanations of each room and some individual paintings. We visit the Danish art section first which also happened to have some Norwegian painters that we saw in Oslo, Johan Christian Dahl, and Edvard Munch ( no scream). We really like Dahl’s work and another painter, Carl Bloch, whose subjects feel like they are staring right at you.
In the European section, there are a few Rembrandts and some very nice Peter Paul Rubens. We then go into the French section and see some Matisse’s and some other artists we were not familiar with. There were a few Picasso’s as well and this is where you come in. Some of Picasso’s work is enigmatic to me so look at this painting posted here and Name That Picasso. What do you see? Put it in the comments section and I will let you know if anyone guesses right. Enjoy.
After the museum we walk to a place called Banana Joes which was supposed to have really good and really inexpensive salmon burgers and fries. Wouldn’t you know it, they are closed for vacation from July 25th to August 20th. We stroll slowly back towards the hotel and pass a Schwarma place that has other items on display. Schwarma is meat grilled on a spit similar to Gyros. We had it in Vancouver, British Columbia and it was very good. So we decide to eat here and get a combo plate where we pick three items and it comes with salad and Tzatsiki.
We Choose a spinach and egg dish, an eggplant dish, and a type of crab cake. We also get one Schwarma wrap called a durum here. All to go we walk back to a canal we had to cross and find a bench to eat on. Everything is good, but I really liked the crab cake and the eggplant best. The Schwarma was third and the spinach I would not get again although it was good but nothing special. A nice inexpensive and quick meal for our first night.
We return to the hotel and check in. Our room is small but very clean and modern with a Star Trek shower. We have beamed ourselves to Copenhagen.

And for my brother, it is 1 Danish Kroner = .15 cents so 10 Kroner is 1.50 and 100 Kroner is 15 dollars. You will have to do the rest of the math!!!
